چکیده

This paper addresses the following main question: How do the structural constraints of Binding Theory interact with on-line sentence processing? There have been two types of answers to this question hypothesized in the literature: (1) the Initial Filter hypothesis, which claims that Binding Theory constrains the sentence processing system from the earliest moments of reference resolution (Nicol & Swinney, 1989; Sturt, 2003); and (2) the Multiple Constraints hypothesis, which claims that Binding Theory constraints are among a larger set of constraints applying simultaneously during sentence processing (Badecker & Straub, 2002). We present the results of a study using eye-movements to investigate the role of Binding Theory during sentence processing. Our results show that from the very earliest moments participants consider both Binding Theory-compatible and Binding Theoryincompatible referents, which is inconsistent with the initial filter hypothesis, but consistent with the multiple constraints hypothesis.

The Use of Second-Person Reference in Advertisement Translation with Reference to Translation between Chinese and English

This research aimed to review the use of second-person reference in advertisement translation, work out the general rules, and provide guidance to translators. Assignment of reference to reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases: evidence from eye movements.

Most structural Binding Theories predict a complementary distribution between reflexives and pronouns in picture noun phrases containing possessors (e.g. "Ken's picture of himself/him"). In two head-mounted eye-tracking experiments, listeners frequently violated Binding Theory predictions for reflexives, often interpreting the reflexives as taking an antecedent outside of the binding domain, an...

One of the challenging aspects of translating Quran is reference switching as rhetorical devices, which are widespread i...

Comprehending the pronouns her, him, and his: Implications for theories of referential processing

The research investigated how comprehenders use structural information during co-reference resolution of the pronouns her, him, and his. In Experiment 1, participants read sentences containing the pronoun her in object position, functioning as SPEC or NP and preceded by one of three types of NPs in subject position (e.g., ‘‘Mary/Mark/They saw her friend/yesterday. . .’’). In Experiment 2, addit...
